How to Celebrate Veterans in Hospice on Veterans Day
Some served our country in foreign lands while others dutifully protected us on our home shores. All of them demonstrate commitment and courage, helping secure the rights and freedoms we so often take for granted. These brave men and women should be celebrated every day—not just on Veterans Day.
As veterans continue to age, there are more and more seeking hospice care. Veterans have unique needs, and at 3HC, we participate in the We Honor Veterans program in order to meet those needs and give them the recognition they deserve.
“Every patient is a wonderful part of our 3HC family, and there’s a special place in our hearts for veterans,” said Rachel Turner, 3HC Patient Experience Coordinator. “We consider it an honor to do our part to recognize them for their duty and sacrifice. We understand that veterans are dealing with different issues than non-veterans, and that’s why it’s so important to tailor care specifically for those who have served our country.”

4 Ways to Honor Veterans in Hospice on Veterans Day
1. Give Them a Care Package
You may wish to consider some small gifts. These can include items such as books or no-slip socks. Speak with your care team about what snacks may or may not be appropriate.
2. Present a “Memory Board”
A letter recognizing the dedication of a veteran in hospice is a simple, yet powerful way of providing respect and comfort. You may wish to include this as part of a “memory board,” a small book or display made of photos and images that reflect their interests or what they love. For example, you may include a family photo or even a picture of a favorite local landmark.
3. Hold a Small Ceremony Honoring Them
How can you show appreciation to veterans in hospice? Even a simple, small recognition ceremony can mean a lot. This doesn’t have to be elaborate. It could be as simple as saying a few words, playing some patriotic music and giving them a pin featuring an American flag, an eagle, or other national symbol.
As part of our We Honor Veterans program, we help provide support for veterans in hospice. We supply educational tools and information on veteran-centric educational activities. This enables us to better serve our veteran patients because they are truly special members of our 3HC family.
4. Create a Tribute Wall or Memorial
If you visit our Kitty Askins Hospice Center, you’ll notice that we already have a veteran memorial garden. If your loved one is a veteran in hospice, they may appreciate a moment in a memorial garden or time to reflect on their memories.
Simply being there for them during this time is meaningful.
Hospice Improves The Quality of Life for Veterans
When facing the last step in life’s journey, we understand how important it is to be able to face those moments with grace and dignity while being as pain-free as possible. This is the time to make precious memories with loved ones.
Veterans do qualify for hospice care if they meet the following criteria:
- They have a diagnosis of six months or less to live
- They have chosen to see comfort care instead of treating the disease
- They have a referral to hospice
Did you know that anyone can make a referral to hospice? That includes not just doctors, but family members, friends, and even the patients themselves!
