Types of Home Health Agencies

There is a wide variety of types of home health agencies. Some, like public health departments, are governmental based. Others are private corporations and may be either proprietary or not-for-profit. Many hospitals and nursing homes also have home health agencies. Whatever the home health agency is, they all have to meet certain rules and regulations.

In some states, including North Carolina, all home health agencies (other than agencies operated by governmental agencies such as public health departments) must be licensed by the state. As part of this process, states have developed certain rules and regulations that agencies must meet to offer their services. Most of these rules and regulations concern the structure of the agency, supervision requirements, medical records, quality improvement and functions of various types of personnel.

Any home health agency that wants to participate in the Medicare or Medicaid programs must also be certified. Certification is basically a federal program, although generally there is a state office responsible for monitoring agency compliance with the certification requirements.
