2002 Kitty Askins Golf Tournament

Tournament was a Great Success!
On May 9th, 2002, 3HC hosted its 8th annual golf tournament benefiting Wings! Camp for Grieving Children at Walnut Creek Country Club located in Goldsboro, NC. This year's tournament was a great success with a total of 32 teams and grossing almost $20,000! Corporate sponsors BB&T and Sportsman's World played an important role in accomplishing this record-breaking feat.

Although the day was unseasonably warm, reaching a hot and humid 92 degrees, all 128 golfers beamed with enthusiasm when sharing about the fun and fellowship shared on the course. PGA professional Clarence Rose was present to challenge all the golfers to play a ball closer to the pin than his shot. If the golfer succeeded, Clarence graciously autographed a visor for the lucky participant.

Even the volunteers had a great day!

After the round was played, prizes were awarded while the golfers partook in a scrumptious banquet - a pasta bar where sauces were made to order. Trophies were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. A special "Spirit Award" was presented to our last place team. And door prizes galore were awarded thanks to the generosity of our local merchants and sponsors from Wayne and Lenoir Counties.

Proceeds from the tournament will help fund Wings! Camp. Each year children from eastern North Carolina are given the opportunity to express their feelings and emotions concerning the death of a family member, role model, friend, or any other loss of a loved one. Children have so little life experience that moving through the grief process can be extremely difficult with lifelong consequences. Wings! teaches coping skills which aid in this journey and will continue to help throughout adulthood.

Big thanks to our event's co-chairs, Dr. Ernest & Lisa Marshall. The Marshalls were instrumental in attracting new golfers and support for the tournament. Also, thanks to all of our volunteers who served on the Tournament Committee, collected door prizes, helped with set-up, and worked throughout the tournament day.
