"What Dying People Want"
Facing death - and the fear and anxiety that arise from it - is part of the human experience. Though much has been done to address the physical pain suffered by those with a terminal illness, Western medicine has been slow to understand and alleviate the psychological and spiritual distress that comes with the knowledge of death. This gap is being bridged by internationally renowned palliative care physician, Dr. David Kuhl and his new book What Dying People Want: Practical Wisdom for the End of Life (Published by PublicAffairs; Publication month: June 2002; Hardcover, $25.00; 317 pages) which was based on research funded by the Soros Foundation's Project on Death in America.
In What Dying People Want, Kuhl addresses end-of-life realities - physical, psychological, and spiritual - through his own experiences as a doctor and through the words and experiences of people who live with the knowledge that they are dying. As featured on "The Oprah Show," Dr. Kuhl presents ways of finding new life in the process of dying, of understanding the inner reality of living with a terminal illness, and of addressing the fear of pain, as well as pain itself. We can learn lessons in living from those who are dying - it is possible to find meaning and peace in the face of death. Drawing from his own touching interviews with terminally ill patients as well as their families, Dr. Kuhl and What Dying People Want provide:
