3HC Celebrates 25 Years of Service

July 7, 2006

GOLDSBORO, N.C. _ During the month of July, local business 3HC (Home Health and Hospice Care, Inc.) celebrates its 25th anniversary of providing medical care in the home.

Founded as Mount Olive Home Health in 1981, 3HC now employs over 700 professionals and operates 9 clinical offices throughout eastern North Carolina, including in-patient Kitty Askins Hospice Center located in Wayne County.

Home Care describes a wide variety of health related services provided in a home setting to maintain or restore an individual's health and well-being. Hospice Care exists to provide support and care for persons in the last phases of incurable disease so that they might live as fully and comfortably as possible.
Lou Ann Jones, 3HC's VP of Clinical Services, states, "Our services are a definite benefit to our community. We provide all types of home care for everyone from the very young to the elderly. We strive to provide a wide array of services so that no one will have to go without home care."

Services provided by 3HC include skilled nursing, medical social work, IV therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, home medical equipment, respite care, personal care services, bereavement counseling, pain management, and end-of-life care.

Further, 3HC continues to stay on the cutting edge of home services and disease management by providing state-of -the-art technology such as HomMed telehealth monitoring and ProTime PT/INR monitoring. Both technologies allow timely response to adverse patient conditions.

Ms. Jones states, "3HC has been a strong agency for 25 years because we embrace change as something positive - whether it is in the form of new technologies, response to staffing needs, continued staff education, and even change in management styles."

Additional 3HC accomplishments include:

Achieving and sustaining a statistically significant improvement in their chosen target outcome by performing above the state average on 10 of the 11 publicly reported outcome measures on Medicare's Home Health Compare

Creating an admissions department to ensure accurate data collection and to maximize the clinical staff's efficiency with patient needs.

Improving communications between clinicians and support staff allowing greater employee input, team building, and creative approaches to problem solving.

Creating a nurse educator position to assist new staff with skills development as a means of improving staff recruitment and retention.

Use of electronic medical recording and telemedicine for improved patient monitoring and patient education as well as reducing the need for emergent care.

Use of camera phones for wound care patients allowing wound care nurses to be immediately involved with all patients with new or problem wounds.

Use of VitalStim technology that electrically stimulates throat muscles improving strength and coordination for dysphagia patients (difficulty swallowing, often due to neurological deficits).

In the fall of 2005, 3HC received the prestigious Transformational Change Leader Award from The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence (CCME), formerly known as Medical Review of North Carolina, at the fifth annual Ralph E. Snyder, MD, Healthcare Leadership Forum in Pinehurst.

Dean Lee, president of 3HC, states, "Success for 3HC over the next 25 years will continue to focus on the needs of our patients and the community. Continuous improvement in quality of care is the driving force to meet those needs. Through the great people of 3HC and the use of innovative technology and techniques, we will continue to be the leader in the home health and hospice services provided to the citizens of eastern North Carolina."
